Safety Bulletin

Thomsen recommends that anyone operating an ice edger follow all safety precautions you would while using a lawn mower. Only one person (the edger operator) should be on the ice at the time of the edging. At no time should anyone to be in line with the edger discharge shoot.

Under no circumstances should the edger blade ever be allowed to contact anything besides the ice. Severe damage to your ice edger, your facility or the operator may result.

Thomsen recommends that the all of the bolts associated with the cutter assembly be checked for tightness regularly. The center bolt must be tightened to a torque of 65 ft/lbs. Start by checking the blade bolts on a weekly basis. If the bolts remain tight, then check when rotating the cutters, or at least once a month.

On machines produced before 1999 with a 3 digit serial number there was a space between the end of the crankshaft and the top of the cutter bar. Confirm that the hub/bar assembly is seated on the end of the motor shaft. If there is a space you must insert a blade spacer (part # 90-192) or cutter bar breakage could occur.

Blades can be checked for sharpness like an ice skate. Drag the edge of the cutter across your thumbnail, if there is a scratch in your nail the blade is sharp. Thomsen Ice Edgers recommends changing or rotating the blades of your machine after every 50 hours of operation.

Briggs and Stratton recommends the use of a 5W-30 Synthetic oil in its engines.
